Hydroponic and vertical farming systems in Dubai
Arkan Integrated Systems supplies closed loop hydroponic and vertical farming systems for restaurants, hotels and commercial growers across the UAE and the Gulf, sized from a single restaurant wall to a 40 square metre production pod.
What is hydroponic farming? Hydroponic farming grows plants in a nutrient solution instead of soil, with light, temperature and nutrient dosing under control. Closed loop systems recirculate the solution and use up to 90% less water than soil based farming, which is what makes the method viable in arid climates.
System sizes
| System | Footprint | Typical setting |
|---|---|---|
| MicroFarm unit | 6 m² | Hotel back of house, small kitchen, pilot installation |
| Restaurant GreenWall | Vertical, wall mounted | Dining room or open kitchen, harvest in front of the guest |
| Hydroponic pod | 20 to 40 m² | Commercial production, catering operations, urban farming |
What is included
- Growing structure and lighting
- Smart irrigation and nutrient dosing control
- Climate control sized for Gulf ambient conditions
- Monitoring of solution parameters
- Commissioning and operator training
Why hydroponics fits the GCC
The constraint in the Gulf is not land, it is water and heat. A closed loop system recovers and reuses the nutrient solution rather than losing it to evaporation and drainage, and the growing environment is decoupled from outdoor temperature. For hospitality operators the second driver is supply: leaf crops harvested on site remove the import lead time and the cold chain losses that come with it.
Typical crops
Leafy greens, herbs and microgreens are the standard starting point because they have short cycles and high value per square metre in restaurant use. Crop selection is confirmed during the technical assessment against the target yield and the available footprint.
Frequently asked questions
Do hydroponic systems work in the Gulf climate?
Yes. Closed loop hydroponic and vertical farming systems use up to 90% less water than soil based farming and run inside a controlled environment, so outdoor heat and humidity do not drive the growing conditions. Arkan sizes the climate control for Gulf ambient conditions.
How much space does a hydroponic installation need?
Arkan supplies MicroFarm units at 6 square metres, wall mounted restaurant GreenWall systems, and hydroponic pods between 20 and 40 square metres. The right size depends on target harvest volume and the crops selected.
What can be grown in these systems?
Leafy greens, herbs and microgreens are the usual starting crops: short cycles and high value per square metre, which suits restaurant and hotel use. Crop selection is confirmed during the technical assessment.
Is the system suitable for a restaurant dining room?
Yes. The restaurant GreenWall is designed to be installed in a visible position so that produce is harvested in front of guests. Back of house MicroFarm units are used where production rather than display is the priority.
